President Tinubu Appoints New NERC Chairman

In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Mulisiu Oseni as the new Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This appointment follows the Senate’s confirmation of the commission’s reconstituted board on December 16, 2025 .

The appointment of Dr. Oseni comes after the withdrawal of Abdullahi Ramat, who was initially nominated by President Tinubu for the position in August 2025. Ramat’s nomination was met with controversy, particularly after he attempted to take over the leadership of NERC without Senate confirmation. He was received by Oseni at a handover ceremony on August 8, 2025, but later left the premises due to public criticism .

The Senate Committee on Power had refused to confirm Ramat’s nomination, citing several petitions against him. This move indicates the importance of due process and consultation in key appointments .

Alongside Dr. Oseni’s appointment, other members have been named to the NERC board, including:

– Dr. Yusuf Ali as Vice Chairman
– Nathan Rogers Shatti, Commissioner
– Dafe Akpeneye, Commissioner
– Aisha Mahmud Kanti Bello, Commissioner
– Dr. Chidi Ike, Commissioner
– Dr. Fouad Animashaun, Commissioner.

President Tinubu has charged the new NERC board to deepen and consolidate the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s power sector, in strict alignment with the letter and spirit of the Electricity Act, 2023 .
