Petition Alleges Unlawful Removal of ELRA CEO, Seeks Reinstatement
A petition has been filed with the Senate by the Northern Alliance Committee (NAC), alleging that the removal of Mr. Njidda as CEO of the Employees’ Provident Fund (ELRA) was unlawful and contravened the ELRA Act and public service rules
The petitioners, led by Prof. Ibrahim Madugu, argued that Njidda’s removal was unceremonious and lacked legitimacy. Madugu cited the ELRA Act, the Code of Conduct Bureau Act, and the Pension Reform Act, among others, as having been violated in the process
Madugu emphasized that without a formal disengagement letter, Njidda’s exit from service cannot be deemed lawful. He also criticized the alleged appointment of a new Registrar without compliance with Public Service Rule 17-0201, calling it a “blatant breach” of due process
The NAC urged lawmakers to intervene and direct Njidda’s reinstatement pending amendments to the ELRA Act. Madugu referenced President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments on the importance of integrity and administrative order, arguing that reforms cannot succeed without adherence to these principles .
The agency has refuted all allegations raised by the petitioners, setting the stage for a potential showdown between the two parties .
1. What are the implications of the alleged unlawful removal of the ELRA CEO for the agency’s operations and stakeholders?
2. How can the Senate and relevant authorities ensure that due process is followed in the appointment and removal of public officials?
