Nnamdi Kanu Transferred to Sokoto Prison: A New Development in the IPOB Leader’s Saga
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been transferred from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja to a correctional facility in Sokoto State. This development was disclosed by Kanu’s former lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, who expressed concern over the move
Ejimakor questioned the wisdom of sending Kanu to Sokoto prison, noting that it would further distance him from his legal team, family, and supporters. He drew parallels with the case of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was sent to the East, a neutral zone, during his conviction in 1963
Kanu’s family has also raised concerns over his safety in the Sokoto prison, alleging that the relocation is a plot to eliminate him by denying him access to his personal physicians. They have called on the international community to hold President Bola Tinubu and the federal government responsible for Kanu’s safety
Nnamdi Kanu was first arrested in 2015 and faced charges of treasonable felony, terrorism, and other related offenses over his leadership of IPOB, a proscribed separatist group. He was extradited from Kenya in 2021 and has been in detention since then. Recently, Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja .
