NLC Urges Government to Boost Education Spending and Improve Teacher Welfare

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the government to increase spending on education and prioritize teacher welfare. According to NLC President Joe Ajaero, teachers are underpaid and undervalued despite their crucial role in nation-building.Teachers’ salaries are not commensurate with their role in shaping the nation’s future.

Schools lack basic facilities, making it difficult for teachers to effectively deliver their services.
Teachers are not given the respect and dignity they deserve, which affects their morale and productivity.

The Federal Government should allocate at least 6% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product and 20% of public expenditure to education, as recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The government should prioritize teacher welfare, including payment of decent wages, provision of social protection, and basic rights.

The current low investment in education has led to a shortage of qualified teachers, which affects the quality of education.
The inadequate funding has also resulted in high student-teacher ratios, making it difficult for teachers to effectively deliver their services .
