Nigeria’s Senate Urges Government to Recruit 100,000 Troops Amid Rising Insecurity

The Nigerian Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to approve the recruitment of 100,000 fresh military personnel to tackle the growing security challenges facing the nation. The lawmakers’ demand follows a recent attack on Government Girls’ Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, where gunmen killed a vice principal and abducted 25 students .

The Senate’s decision was triggered by the escalating insecurity in the country, particularly in the North-West region, where banditry, kidnappings, and communal tensions have become increasingly prevalent. Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who led the call for massive recruitment and a security audit, emphasized that the scale of insecurity requires a strategic expansion of the armed forces

The Senate has also demanded a full investigation into the Safe School Programme, questioning how funds allocated to the initiative were spent despite repeated attacks on educational institutions. Oshiomhole lamented that “people have turned our security into a business” and urged the government to deploy technology and tracking devices to track down criminals

The Senate’s resolution was unanimously adopted by lawmakers across party lines, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio endorsing the call for 100,000 new troops and supporting the probe of the Safe School Programme. The Senate has taken a significant step towards addressing the security challenges facing Nigeria, and it remains to be seen how the government will respond to their demands .
