Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology Resigns Amid Certificate Forgery Allegations
In a shocking turn of events, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following allegations of certificate forgery. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), had formally disowned Nnaji’s Bachelor of Science degree certificate, stating that he never graduated from the institution and was never issued such a document. This revelation sparked widespread criticism, with many questioning the authenticity of Nnaji’s academic and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Credentials.
In court documents filed before Justice Hauwa Yilwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nnaji admitted that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), never issued him a degree certificate. Despite this, Nnaji had claimed to have completed his studies in 1985. His resignation letter cited blackmail by political opponents as the reason for his decision to step down .
The scandal has raised concerns about the integrity and transparency of public service appointments in Nigeria. The Enugu State Government has urged Nnaji to clear his name, stating that the allegations against him are a personal matter .
Nnaji tendered his resignation on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, which was accepted by President Tinubu.
