Nigeria’s Lawmakers Push for Unified National Database and Indigenous Tech Solutions

The House of Representatives has called for a unified national data system and a shift towards homegrown technological solutions to drive governance, planning, and economic growth. Chairman of the House Committee on Trade and Investment, Ahmed Munir, emphasized the need for Nigeria to break away from relying on imported models and instead build technology frameworks that reflect its unique development realities.

Munir highlighted the challenges posed by the country’s fragmented identity and information systems, citing overlapping databases across ministries and regulatory agencies that complicate budgeting and service delivery. He stressed the importance of a unified national database that captures every citizen’s data from birth to death, enabling accurate budget preparation and resource allocation.

The lawmaker emphasized the need for Nigerians to develop solutions that address the country’s specific challenges. “The innovation we need to transform our economy must start here, with Nigerians who understand the challenges and are willing to create solutions for them,” Munir said. This approach, he noted, would enable the country to harness its local talent and expertise to drive development.

The House of Representatives’ call for a unified national database and homegrown tech solutions marks a significant step towards digitization and data-driven governance. By embracing this approach, Nigeria can unlock new opportunities for growth, improve service delivery, and enhance the overall quality of life for its citizens.
