Nigeria’s Federal College of Education, Bichi, Allocates Billions for Infrastructure

The Federal College of Education, Bichi, in Kano, Nigeria, has unveiled its 2025 budget, allocating substantial funds for infrastructure development. A review of the approved budget by SaharaReporters reveals that the college has set aside *N1 billion for the construction of a perimeter fence*, a move that has raised eyebrows about the prioritization of spending

In contrast, the budget allocates *N70 million for renovating student hostels* and *N90 million for classroom and office renovations*. The rehabilitation of the college clinic is expected to cost *N50 million*, while *N60 million* is allocated for the purchase of computers for various units within the school. Notably, the college plans to spend a whopping *N5 billion on building infrastructure and facilities.

The allocations have sparked concerns about the prudent use of public funds, given the college’s history of infrastructure challenges. In 2023, the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) raised alarms about the poor condition of academic facilities, despite receiving allocations and funds from TETfund ¹.

The union highlighted various issues, including unpaid staff allowances, mismanagement of NHIS funds, and failure to remit pension contributions, Federal Mortgage Bank dues, union check-off dues, and staff cooperative deductions As the college embarks on its infrastructure development projects, it remains to be seen how these allocations will address the pressing needs of its students and staff.
