Nigeria’s Education System: A Crisis of Neglect”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has attributed the persistent education crisis in Nigeria to the Federal Government’s neglect of the sector. ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, lamented that government officials do not consider education problems as national concerns requiring collective responsibility.

Piwuna noted that members of the Federal Executive Council view education challenges as the sole responsibility of the Minister of Education, rather than a collective issue that requires a unified response. This lack of ownership has hindered efforts to achieve sustainable reforms in the education sector.

The neglect of the education sector has led to numerous problems, including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and unpaid promotion arrears. ASUU has repeatedly gone on strike to press for its demands, citing government proposals that depart from agreed terms and unresolved issues.

Piwuna’s statement serves as a wake-up call for the government to prioritize education and adopt a more collaborative approach to addressing the sector’s challenges. By working together, the government and stakeholders can find lasting solutions to the education crisis and ensure a brighter future for Nigeria’s students and academics.
