Nigeria’s Challenges: A Collective Responsibility
As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Day anniversary, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, has emphasized that the country’s challenges did not begin with the current administration. According to Akume, President Bola Tinubu has embarked on bold reforms to tackle some of these challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies.
Akume stressed that every Nigerian has a role to play in building the nation, stating, “Each Nigerian has a role in building the Nigeria that we deserve.” He urged Nigerians to support the President’s efforts, saying, “The President needs the support of every Nigerian.” This message underscores the importance of collective action in addressing the country’s challenges .The SGF also emphasized the need for cooperation among the three arms of government, stating, “We must always cooperate, Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary.” This cooperation is crucial for effective governance and progress.
Akume noted that the Independence Day celebration is not just a day to celebrate Nigeria’s freedom from colonial rule but also a day to honor the country’s founding fathers who fought for independence.
While some critics argue that the Tinubu administration’s policies have exacerbated economic challenges, others see the reforms as necessary steps towards a more stable economy. The removal of fuel subsidies, for instance, has been a contentious issue, with some arguing it has led to increased hardship for Nigerians. However, Akume remains optimistic, saying, “At the end of the tunnel, there is light” .
