Nigeria’s Ambitious Wheat Production Plan: A ₦160 Billion Target

The Federal Government has launched a new initiative to boost wheat production in Nigeria, with a target of 40,000 hectares of land for the 2025/2026 dry season. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, announced that the programme aims to support 80,000 registered farmers and achieve an output value of approximately ₦160 billion.

The National Agricultural Growth and Agro Pocket Project (NAGSAP)

The NAGSAP programme will provide critical support to farmers, including subsidized inputs, modern agronomic practices, and continuous field-level advisory services. The programme will also deploy Agricultural Extension Agents to guide farmers and ensure that all inputs meet the required standards.

– 40,000 hectares of land earmarked for wheat production in the 2025/2026 dry season
– 80,000 registered farmers expected to benefit from the programme
– ₦160 billion output value targeted
– 16 states covered under the programme, including Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, and others
– Programme designed to include women and young people, providing access to training and agricultural opportunities

The programme is a step towards achieving food security and reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported wheat. By supporting farmers and providing them with the necessary resources, the government hopes to increase wheat production and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
