Nigerian Senate Sets Deadline for Passage of ₦58.472 Trillion 2026 Budget
The Nigerian Senate has tentatively fixed March 17, 2026, for the final consideration and passage of the ₦58.472 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill. This decision was made after a special session where the Senate Committee on Appropriations approved key dates for the budget process .
– February 2-13, 2026: Consideration of budget estimates at the committee level
– February 9, 2026: Public hearing on the budget proposal
– March 5, 2026: Interactive session between the committee and key economic managers, including Ministers Wale Edun and Atiku Bagudu
– February 16-23, 2026: Submission of reports on budget defense by standing committee chairmen
– March 17, 2026: Presentation of the Appropriations Committee’s report to the Senate and final passage of the budget.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, stated that the Senate leadership initially preferred the budget to be passed by March 12, 2026. However, he successfully appealed for an additional week to allow for more thorough scrutiny of the estimates. To aid in this process, hard copies of the 2026 budget have been printed and distributed to chairmen and members of the Senate’s standing committees .
