Nigerian Parliament Delays WAEC’s Computer-Based Testing to 2030

The House of Representatives has directed the Federal Ministry of Education and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to postpone the planned introduction of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination to 2030. This decision comes after a motion of urgent public importance was adopted during a plenary session, citing concerns over the readiness of schools, particularly in rural areas.

Challenges in Implementing CBT

Lawmaker Kelechi Wogu highlighted the potential risks of rushing into CBT, including widespread failure, frustration, and mental distress among students. He noted that most schools lack essential infrastructure such as functional computer labs, stable internet, reliable electricity, and trained ICT teachers. Wogu emphasized that introducing CBT without adequate preparation would be disastrous, pointing to technical issues that disrupted the 2025 WAEC results portal.

Addressing Infrastructure Gaps

To bridge the infrastructure gap, the House of Representatives has tasked the Ministry of Education and state governments with including provisions in their 2026-2029 budgets for:
Recruiting Computer Teachers  Hiring qualified educators to teach computer skills
Constructing ICT Halls Building well-equipped facilities for computer-based exams
Installing Internet Facilities Providing stable internet connectivity
Backup Power Sources Ensuring uninterrupted power supply

The House’s directive aims to ensure that schools are adequately prepared for the transition to CBT. By addressing the infrastructure gaps and providing necessary resources, the government can help mitigate potential disruptions and ensure a smooth transition to computer-based exams. This move is expected to benefit students and educators alike, ultimately leading to a more efficient and effective examination process.
