Nigerian Lawmakers Clash Over Budget Hearing
A heated exchange between two Nigerian lawmakers disrupted a joint committee meeting on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, as they debated the Federal Ministry of Works’ proposed N3.4 trillion budget for 2026. The meeting, attended by Minister of Works, David Umahi, was convened to scrutinize the ministry’s budget proposal.
The controversy began when Senator Peter Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District, was recognized to ask questions on the budget proposal. However, instead of posing questions, Nwebonyi used his allotted time to commend President Bola Tinubu’s administration and Minister Umahi’s performance. Chairman Rufai Hanga, Senator for Kano Central, intervened, asking Nwebonyi to conclude his remarks after five minutes.
Nwebonyi reacted angrily, accusing Hanga of attempting to silence him because he is an opposition member. The senator insisted that the chairman lacked the authority to prevent him from commending the president. The exchange escalated into a heated argument, briefly disrupting the committee’s proceedings.
The meeting was convened to discuss the Federal Ministry of Works’ proposed N3.4 trillion budget for 2026. Minister Umahi appeared before the joint committee to defend the ministry’s budget proposal.
