Nigerian History Reintroduced into Basic School Curriculum

The Federal Government has announced the reintroduction of Nigerian History as a compulsory subject in the basic education curriculum, aiming to strengthen national identity, unity, patriotism, and responsible citizenship. This move marks a significant shift in the country’s approach to education, recognizing the importance of history in shaping the nation’s future.

Nigerian pupils will study History continuously from Primary 1 to JSS3, while SSS1-3 students will take the new Civic and Heritage Studies, integrating History with Civic Education.
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including Nigeria’s origins, heroes, rulers, culture, politics, economy, religions, colonial rule, and post-independence governance.
The curriculum is tailored to specific age groups, with Primary 1-6 students learning about Nigeria’s history and culture, while JSS1-3 students will study civilisations, empires, trade, European contacts, amalgamation, independence, democracy, and civic values .

The reintroduction of History aims to strengthen national identity and unity by reconnecting children with their roots and inspiring pride, unity, and commitment to national development.
The curriculum is designed to promote patriotism and responsible citizenship, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute to Nigeria’s growth and development.

The Federal Ministry of Education has released the revised curriculum and will retrain teachers, provide resources, and strengthen monitoring to ensure effective implementation.
