Nigerian Government Releases ₦2.3 Billion to Settle University Lecturers’ Salary Arrears
The Nigerian government has taken a significant step towards resolving the salary arrears owed to university lecturers across the country. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced that ₦2.3 billion has been released to offset outstanding salary and promotion arrears.
The minister emphasized that the administration is committed to rebuilding confidence through transparency and consistency in funding. He noted that President Tinubu remains resolute in his determination to resolve all lingering welfare and funding issues in a transparent, fair, and sustainable manner.
– Release of funds :₦2.3 billion has been released to offset salary and promotion arrears owed to university lecturers.
– Payment process: The funds were processed under the supervision of the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
– Third-party deductions :The Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation are finalizing the release of third-party non-statutory deductions and pension remittances.
-Earned Academic Allowance: The Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) will be fully integrated into university staff salaries from 2026, eliminating recurrent delays.
The release of these funds is expected to bring relief to university lecturers who have been waiting for their salary arrears. The decision to integrate the EAA into university staff salaries will also ensure that lecturers receive their allowances in a prompt, predictable, and sustainable manner.
