Nigeria Labour Congress Stages Nationwide Protest Over Rising Insecurity
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commenced a nationwide protest against the escalating insecurity in the country. Members of the NLC gathered at the union’s secretariat in Abuja, awaiting directives from their leadership .
The protest is aimed at drawing the government’s attention to the worsening security situation, which has led to numerous kidnappings, killings, and banditry. NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized that the protest is necessary to awaken the government to its responsibilities of tackling economic hardships and insecurity .
The NLC is demanding that the government take concrete actions to address the security challenges facing the country. Ajaero cited examples of workers being kidnapped and killed, saying that the children of workers are also being kidnapped. He emphasized that the government needs to fish out the perpetrators of these crimes .
The NLC’s protest is being closely monitored by security personnel, including the police, civil defence, and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS). The deployment is aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of protesters .
The protest has received support from civil society groups, including the Revolution Now Movement led by Omoyele Sowore. The group has expressed solidarity with the NLC and has called on Nigerians to participate in the protest.
