Nigeria Denies Allegations of Involvement in Niger Pipeline Attack

The Nigerian government has vehemently denied accusations by Nigerien authorities that it played a key role in the December 13 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline in Gaya, Dosso Region, Niger Republic ¹. The attack, which was allegedly carried out by the Lakurawa terrorist group, has strained relations between Nigeria and Niger, which have been tense since Niger’s military takeover in 2023.

According to a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria denies any involvement with the Lakurawa terrorist group or allegations that its security forces collaborated in the incident ². The government expressed condolences to Niger over the attack but emphasized its unwavering commitment to combating terrorism and disassociating itself from any such groups.

*A Complex Web of Relations*

The accusations come amidst a complex web of relations between Nigeria, Niger, and France. Niger’s foreign minister had summoned the charge d’affaires at the Nigerian embassy, accusing Nigeria of “serving as a rear base” to “destabilize” the country ¹. Additionally, the Nigerian government has dismissed claims of French military presence in northern Nigeria allegedly aimed at destabilizing Niger, describing these accusations as baseless ².

Despite the tensions, Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with Niger for the benefit of the people of both countries. The government has expressed its willingness to explore all peaceful means to resolve the issues and promote regional stability
