New Terrorist Group, ‘Lukarawas,’ Emerges in Northwest Nigeria, DHQ Confirms

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the rise of a new terrorist group operating in the Northwest region of Nigeria, called the ‘Lukarawas.’ This revelation was made by Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, during a press briefing in Abuja on November 7, 2024. The announcement came as part of an update on ongoing military operations across the country.

According to General Buba, the Lukarawas group emerged from neighboring Niger Republic, following the recent coup that severed military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger. This disruption allowed the terrorist group to exploit the lack of cross-border collaboration, particularly in regions near Sokoto and Kebbi States in Nigeria’s northwestern corner.

Before the coup, Nigerian and Nigerien security forces had been working together to curb terrorism along the shared border, which had kept extremist activities in check. However, with the breakdown in cooperation, the group began to cross into Nigerian territory, using difficult terrain and remote areas as cover. Buba noted that the terrorists took advantage of these gaps, advancing their operations and spreading their radical ideology.

Interestingly, local communities initially welcomed the group, mistakenly believing their intentions were benevolent. However, they failed to report the group’s presence to the authorities, which allowed the terrorists to establish a foothold in the region. General Buba emphasized that Nigerian troops have since ramped up intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts to track and neutralize the terrorists.

Despite their efforts to hide in poorly governed areas, military forces are actively engaged in locating and dismantling the group’s presence, with a focus on eliminating the threat they pose to the local population. The DHQ reassured Nigerians that the security forces are committed to bringing the situation under control.

This new development comes as part of the broader challenge Nigeria faces in addressing the growing influence of terror groups across the region. The DHQ’s efforts remain focused on maintaining security and restoring stability in affected areas.
