New Direction for Education: FG Scraps Indigenous Language Policy

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the national policy that mandated the use of indigenous languages as the medium of instruction in Nigerian schools. This decision was revealed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, at a recent conference in Abuja.

The policy, introduced in 2022, aimed to promote indigenous languages and improve early childhood learning outcomes. However, the government has now decided to adopt English as the language of instruction across all levels of education, citing poor academic performance in areas where mother-tongue instruction was emphasized.

This move marks a significant shift in the country’s education policy. While the decision may have its supporters and critics, it’s essential to consider the potential impact on the education system and the role of indigenous languages in Nigerian society.

As the education sector adapts to this new direction, it will be interesting to see how this policy change affects learning outcomes and the preservation of indigenous languages.
