Nepal Imposes Travel Ban on Former PM and Officials Amidst

Investigation into Deadly Unrest
Nepal’s government has imposed travel bans on former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and four senior officials as part of an investigation into deadly protests that erupted earlier this month. The protests, which began as a youth-led movement against a social media ban and economic hardship, quickly escalated into nationwide unrest, resulting in at least 73 deaths and widespread destruction.

The protests were sparked by a brief social media ban, economic hardship, and corruption, and were met with a deadly crackdown by authorities. The violence that ensued led to the burning down of parliament and government offices, ultimately forcing the government’s collapse.

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has set up a commission to probe the violence, which recommended the travel bans on Oli and the four other officials. In addition to Oli, the travel bans have been placed on:

Former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. Former head of the National Investigation Department security agency, Hutaraj Thapa
Two other senior bureaucrats

The travel bans are part of a broader effort to hold those responsible for the violence accountable. The investigation is ongoing, and the commission will continue to gather evidence and testimony. The travel bans are seen as a significant step towards ensuring accountability and transparency in the investigation.

The imposition of travel bans on former PM Oli and other officials marks a crucial step in Nepal’s efforts to address the underlying issues that led to the protests and to ensure accountability for the violence that occurred. As the investigation continues, the international community will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
