National Assembly Under Threat: Terrorists Vow to Bomb Parliament
The House of Representatives Committee on Internal Security has raised a red flag over threats by terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex. Chairman Garba Muhammad sounded the alarm at a public hearing, citing the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard lawmakers, staff, and visitors.
Muhammad revealed that the National Assembly has received threats not only from terrorists but also from protesters who plan to lock up the complex. He expressed concern about the ease with which individuals can gain access to lawmakers’ offices without formal appointments, putting legislators at risk.
The lawmaker warned that failure to address these security lapses could disrupt legislative activities, with far-reaching consequences for governance and democracy. “If activities are thwarted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no annual budget, no plenary at all — and that will destabilise legislative procedure, democracy, and the stability of the system, and our nation at large.”
The National Assembly is pushing for the establishment of a Legislative Security Directorate to improve security management and protect its members and staff. With terrorists and protesters posing a threat, it’s imperative that authorities take swift action to prevent any potential attacks and ensure the continuity of legislative business. The security and safety of Nigeria’s lawmakers and citizens depend on it.
