The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made significant progress in its investigation into the alleged embezzlement of N44.8 billion from the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA). The anti-graft agency has recovered approximately N39.8 billion from Halima Shehu, the former National Coordinator of NSIPA, who is accused of orchestrating the massive fraud .
Shehu allegedly signed off N44 billion from the government account in just five days, between December 27th and 31st, 2023, without approval from the President or the Federal Executive Council.
The EFCC is probing three second-generation banks for their alleged complicity in the illegal transfers of funds meant for poverty alleviation and other intervention schemes.
The recovered amount of N39.8 billion indicates the EFCC’s commitment to recovering stolen funds and ensuring accountability .
The incident was discovered by Betta Edu, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, who immediately reported it to the EFCC. This raises concerns about accountability and transparency in government agencies, particularly in the handling of funds meant for critical social programs .
The outcome of this case will have significant implications for governance and accountability in Nigeria. The EFCC’s efforts to investigate and recover stolen funds demonstrate its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of the law .
