Lagos State Government Launches Crackdown on Street Begging

The Lagos State Government has initiated a crackdown on street begging, with 15 individuals apprehended during an enforcement operation at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12. This move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain order, ensure safety, and protect public spaces from misuse.

According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, the state government will continue to enforce the law while working with relevant social welfare agencies to provide rehabilitation for those in need. This approach aims to address the root causes of street begging and provide support for vulnerable individuals .

This recent operation is not an isolated incident, as the Lagos State Government has been conducting similar exercises in various parts of the city. In December 2024, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce arrested 17 individuals, including eight minors, for alleged street begging along major routes in Ikoyi and Victoria Island. The government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for all residents .

 

The Lagos State Government’s efforts to curb street begging are part of its broader vision to create a Cleaner Lagos and a Greater Lagos. By enforcing laws and providing support for vulnerable individuals, the government aims to promote a safer and more orderly society for all residents .
