Labour Unions Take to the Streets: NAFDAC Protests Enter 7th Day
Hundreds of workers from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association (FOBTOB) gathered outside NAFDAC’s Isolo office in Lagos, protesting the agency’s enforcement of a ban on sachet alcohol and 10cl PET bottled products.

The ban has led to the closure of indigenous factories, depots, and warehouses, resulting in job losses and financial strain for workers. Union officials argue that the enforcement is unfair and economically harmful, with far-reaching consequences for the economy.
Protesters chanted “No work for us, no work for you,” blocking access to the office for nearly two hours. The demonstration remained peaceful, with police intervention restoring order. Union officials vowed to continue protesting until their grievances are addressed.
The shutdowns have affected families, transporters, raw material suppliers, distributors, retailers, and logistics operators. The unions warn that prolonged closures could exacerbate youth poverty, increase social vices, and pose national security concerns.
