Kwara State Government Faces Criticism for Prioritizing Luxury Over Security

The Kwara State Government, led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, has come under fire for its handling of security funds. According to a detailed budget performance report, the government failed to release N3 billion earmarked for security equipment between January and September 2025, despite the state experiencing multiple attacks during this period.

Kwara State has been plagued by insecurity, with residents frequently killed and properties destroyed in repeated attacks by bandits and other non-state actors. In one recent incident, at least 162 persons were killed by rampaging bandits in Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.

While security funds remained unspent, the state government spent N3.5 billion on vehicles and N3.2 billion on hotels during the same period. Additionally, N578 million was spent on purchasing 33 Toyota Saloon Cars for public office holders, and N1.4 billion was spent on motor vehicles for all MDAs .

The Kwara State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the governor’s priorities, stating that the administration is more interested in luxury than the welfare of its citizens. The PDP noted that the governor allocated only N300 million for security in the 2025 fiscal year, while budgeting N1.4 billion for luxury vehicles for lawmakers .

The Kwara State Government’s priorities have been called into question, with many wondering why security funds remain unspent while luxury items are being purchased. The state’s residents deserve better, and it remains to be seen how the government will address the security challenges facing the state.
