Kwara NUT Urges Government to Address Teachers’ Welfare Issues

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Kwara State has called on the government to urgently address outstanding welfare issues affecting public school teachers. This call was made during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration at the union’s main conference hall in Ilorin.

The union demanded the implementation of the 27.5% allowance for TRCN-certified teachers and 21% for non-TRCN-certified teachers.
The NUT also urged the government to adopt the 65/40 years national harmonized retirement age for teachers.
The union demanded the payment of rural allowances to teachers in remote areas.

NUT Chairman, Yusuf Agboola, expressed concern that critical welfare matters remain unattended to, despite the government’s efforts in paying salaries and promoting teachers. He emphasized that teachers can only deliver their best if equipped and respected. Agboola also urged teachers to embrace collaboration and mentorship to reposition the profession .

The NUT National President, Comrade Audu Titus Amba, called on governments to adequately fund public education and invest in teachers. He stressed that without deliberate investment in teachers, the future of education is at risk. Amba commended the resilience of teachers in Kwara, despite challenges, and assured that the union will continue to demand that teachers are accorded their rightful status and pride of place in society.

The NUT’s call for improved welfare for teachers is a timely reminder of the importance of investing in education. By addressing these issues, the government can help ensure that teachers are motivated and supported to deliver quality education.
