The Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the recent mass abduction of Christian worshippers in Kajuru local government area of the state. According to reports, about 170 worshippers were abducted from three different church services on Sunday, January 19, 2026, with six of them miraculously escaping from the abductors and returning home with injuries .
The state CAN chairman, Rev. Caleb Ma’aji Bawa, described the incident as “regrettable, shameful, and disappointing”. He expressed worry that despite governments’ efforts to ensure Nigerians go about their businesses safely, there are still miscreants and criminals who engage in such heinous acts .
Rev. Bawa prayed for the safe return of all those kidnapped and called for divine intervention to bring an end to the continuous kidnapping and other criminal activities in different parts of the country. He also urged citizens to partner with government and security personnel to expose all criminal elements in the society .
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the abduction incident and deployed tactical units for rescue operations. The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the full deployment of critical operational and intelligence assets to Kajuru and surrounding communities .
There are discrepancies in reports about the number of abductees, with some sources putting the figure at 172, while others say it’s over 160. The Kaduna State Police Command initially denied the incident, but later confirmed it .
The abduction of worshippers in Kaduna is a disturbing incident that highlights the security challenges facing the country. It is essential for government, security agencies, and citizens to work together to prevent such incidents and ensure the safe return of those abducted.
