India to Host 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games: Ahmedabad Recommended as Host City
In a significant victory for Indian sports, Ahmedabad has been recommended as the host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games. The Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport announced its decision on Wednesday, beating out Abuja, Nigeria, in a highly competitive bidding process.
The recommendation marks a significant milestone for the Commonwealth Sport Movement as it prepares to celebrate 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. The 2030 Games are expected to showcase India’s world-class sporting and event capabilities, while also playing a meaningful role in the nation’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
The recommendation will now be put to a vote at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025. While the outcome is largely seen as a formality, the final decision rests with the full Commonwealth Sport membership.
Despite missing out on the 2030 Games, Nigeria’s bid has not gone unnoticed. The Commonwealth Sport Executive Board has agreed to develop a strategy for supporting and accelerating Nigeria’s hosting ambitions for future Games, including consideration for 2034. This move reflects the organization’s commitment to taking the Commonwealth Games to the African continent.
The recommendation of Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Centenary Commonwealth Games is a testament to India’s growing dominance in global sports. As the country prepares to host the Games, it is expected to inspire youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth.
