Imo State to Launch Measles and Rubella Immunization Campaign

The Imo State Government has announced plans to launch a mass immunization campaign against measles and rubella, targeting at least 2.6 million people, particularly children between nine months and 14 years. The campaign, which will run from February 4 to 15, 2026, aims to prevent the spread of these highly contagious diseases and protect children from long-term health issues .

According to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Odom, measles and rubella can cause serious health problems, including blindness, congenital cataract, deafness, and holes in the heart in children. Pregnant women are also at risk, and the viruses can have devastating consequences if left unchecked .

The government is urging parents and guardians to allow their children to be vaccinated, emphasizing that the vaccine is safe and effective. Dr. Ezeogu, representative of the International Association of Paediatricians, stressed that the measles and rubella viruses can be stopped through vaccination, and that it is essential to present children within the target age group for immunization .

The immunization campaign is being supported by various health stakeholders, including the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC). Representatives from these organizations have warned that refusal to vaccinate children may result in preventable colossal harm .
