Ibeno Community Rallies Behind Lagos-Calabar Highway Project
The people of Ibeno Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State have shown their support for the Federal Government’s Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project by staging a solidarity rally. The community is in favor of the project passing through their territory, and they have also commended Governor Umo Eno for his stance on the disputed Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve .
The Stubbs Creek Forest Reserve has been a point of contention between the Eket and Ibeno people, with both communities claiming ownership. The Eket people have cited a 1918 judgment of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council to support their claim. However, the state government has clarified that the historic case did not vest ownership of the land in any ethnic group or community
The Ibeno community came out in large numbers, dressed in white attire, to show their support for the project. They carried placards with messages such as “Dialogue not dispute, Ibeno is for peace” and “Ibeno says yes to coastal highway”. The rally was a peaceful demonstration of their commitment to the project and their desire for peace and development in the area .
