House of Representatives Urges FG to Curb Arbitrary Rent Hikes

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to take decisive action against arbitrary rent increases nationwide. Through the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the government is urged to protect citizens from exploitative rent hikes that are detrimental to their welfare.

This development follows a motion sponsored by Bassey Akiba, member representing Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal Constituency, Cross River State. Akiba emphasized that unregulated rent increments threaten stability in the housing sector and make it difficult for families and businesses to meet rental obligations.

Reports of rent hikes have been documented in various parts of the country, particularly in areas with new government infrastructural projects. In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), rents have skyrocketed, with some neighborhoods experiencing increases from ₦800,000 to ₦2.5 million annually for a two-bedroom flat. This has plunged many Nigerians into economic distress.

While acknowledging landlords’ rights, Akiba stressed the need to protect tenants’ welfare to ensure fairness and economic balance. This call to action is not new, as a similar resolution was passed in May 2024, advocating for rent control and landlords’ regulation within the FCT.

If implemented, this resolution could provide relief to tenants struggling with rent hikes and promote stability in the housing sector. However, it remains to be seen how the government will balance the interests of landlords and tenants.

The House of Representatives’ move highlights the growing concerns about housing affordability and the need for effective regulation to protect citizens’ rights .
