House Committee Urges Immediate Payment of Contractors
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement has called on the Accountant General of the Federation, Shamsudeen Ogunjimi, to expedite payment to contractors working on various government projects. This move aims to alleviate the financial burden on contractors who have been waiting for payment for their services.
The committee’s request comes after contractors staged a peaceful protest in Abuja in September 2025, highlighting their struggles with delayed payments. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, intervened, assuring contractors of the government’s commitment to honoring its contractual obligations.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Public Procurement, Unyime Idem, emphasized the need for prompt payment, citing the committee’s receipt of petitions regarding delayed and non-payment for jobs delivered over the past two years. The committee’s demand is aimed at ensuring that contractors are paid for their work, which is essential for the successful completion of government projects.
The House Committee’s demand for immediate payment to contractors is a step towards resolving the issue of delayed payments and ensuring that government projects are completed on time. By honoring its contractual obligations of contractors, the government can build trust and maintain a positive relationship with its partners, ultimately contributing to the country’s economic growth and development.
