Ghana’s Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings Passes Away at 76

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the widow of Ghana’s longest-serving leader Jerry John Rawlings, has passed away at the age of 76. She died on Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a brief illness at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

As First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a pioneering figure in Ghanaian politics, known for her tireless advocacy for women’s empowerment and social development. She founded the 31st December Women’s Movement, which aimed to promote women’s participation in business, politics, and community development.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was a trailblazer in Ghanaian politics, becoming the first woman to run for president in 2016. She was also a key figure in the National Democratic Congress (NDC), serving as the party’s first vice-chairperson.

The news of her passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes and condolences from across Ghana and beyond. President John Mahama, who leads the NDC, paid tribute to her legacy, and Ghana’s parliament adjourned in her honor .
