FreeNnamdiKanuNow: Activists Storm Abuja Markets, Mobilize Support for October 20 Protest

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and a team of lawyers have begun mobilizing support for the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for October 20, 2025. The protest aims to demand the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Sowore described Kanu’s detention as “the most useless case in Nigeria,” alleging that the Federal Government lacks credible evidence to justify his continued detention. He urged Nigerians to join the protest, emphasizing that it would send a strong message to the authorities.

The activists visited several markets in Abuja, including:
-Utako Modern Market
-Wuse Market
– GSM Village
-Timber Market, Gwagwalada
-Neighbourhood Centre, Zone 3

Sowore encouraged traders to lock up their shops and join the demonstration, warning that the government still has a “window of opportunity” to release Kanu before October 20. He criticized the government for granting pardons to convicted criminals while keeping Kanu in detention.

government is clear: release Kanu or face the consequences of the protest. With over 1.5 million Nigerians already expressing interest in participating, the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest is shaping up to be a significant event.
