FOOD AND NUTRITION COMMITTEE TAKES “HEALTHY EATING, HEALTHY LIVING” CAMPAIGN TO BAKASSI LGA
In a proactive move to improve health and nutrition awareness at the grassroots, the Food and Nutrition Committee of Bakassi Local Government Area, led by *Hon. Princess Christiana Eso* , the Coordinator food and nutrition, Bakassi LGA and the Honorable Vice Chairman Bakassi LGA, has carried out a sensitization and awareness campaign with the theme “Healthy Eating, Healthy Living.”
The campaign, held in Bakassi LGA, brought together parents, schoolchildren, teachers, health workers, and community leaders in a united effort to promote better food choices and dietary practices.
Speaking at the event, *Hon. Princess Christiana Eso* stressed the importance of embracing natural, locally sourced food over highly processed alternatives. She encouraged families to consume what they grow, citing nutrient-rich local staples such as okra, vegetables, periwinkle, fish, shrimps, and snail as vital to maintaining good health.
“Farm produce should not only be for sale at the market,” she said, “but also consumed at home for the well-being of our families. Our health depends on what we eat.” She further urged nursing mothers to take breastfeeding seriously, describing it as the best foundation for a child’s growth and development.
Also speaking on behalf of the Head of Local Government Administration (HOLGA), *Mrs. Offiong, the Director for Education, Mrs. Clara* , emphasized the role of balanced diets in academic performance and general well-being. She called on parents to pay close attention to what their children consume daily.
In his remarks, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Community Relations, *Mr. Maurice Eyo* , encouraged teachers to integrate food and nutrition education into school syllabuses and promote school farming. He noted that early education on nutrition would help raise a generation that values healthy living from a young age.
Health professionals, including nurses and nutritionists who were present at the event, delivered goodwill messages reinforcing the need for dietary discipline and hygiene. They also offered practical tips on meal preparation, emphasizing affordable and accessible options within the community.
A major highlight of the event was the distribution of instant cereal to children, putting smiles on their faces while reinforcing the message of healthy nutrition.
The campaign was well-received by the community and is expected to create lasting awareness on the importance of food choices to individual and communal well-being.
