FG Urges Judiciary to Expedite Trials of Terrorism and Kidnapping Cases

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has called on the judiciary to fast-track the trial of terrorism, human trafficking, kidnapping, and other violent crimes. Fagbemi made this appeal during the ceremony marking the commencement of the Court of Appeal 2025/2026 Legal Year in Abuja .

The AGF emphasized that the judiciary must support national efforts to combat insecurity through firm, consistent, and courageous adjudication. He stressed that the country’s insecurity challenges require collective resolve and that the judiciary plays a crucial role in ensuring that those who threaten peace and stability are held accountable .

Fagbemi highlighted the importance of swift justice in terrorism cases, stating that it demonstrates that terrorism faces immediate and decisive legal action. He also noted that the Federal Government remains committed to combating terrorism through a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies .

The AGF acknowledged that the courts need more personnel and expressed the government’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary. He announced that President Bola Tinubu’s administration plans to appoint additional judges to the Federal High Court to handle terrorism-related cases and other cases promptly and effectively .

Fagbemi called on all citizens to unite in confronting the scourge of terrorism, emphasizing that this is a time for collective resolve, not distraction. He urged the judiciary to work together with the government to secure the nation and protect its citizens.
