Federal High Court Denies Assassination Attempt on Justice Omotosho

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rubbished claims that Justice James Omotosho survived an assassination attempt following the life sentence imposed on Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra. According to the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, Sulaiman Hassan, the report is “completely false and unfounded”

A blogger had reported on his Facebook page that Justice Omotosho survived an assassination attempt on Saturday morning, just days after handing down the life sentence to Kanu. The report claimed that the judge was immediately rushed to a hospital as security forces scrambled to secure the area

The Federal High Court has advised the public to treat the publication as fake news and refrain from further dissemination to prevent the spread of misinformation. The court has also called on relevant security agencies to launch a probe into the report with a view to arresting and prosecuting the culprits

The goal of the investigation is to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this false report and prosecute them in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, particularly those relating to cybercrime, defamation, and public misinformation

Justice Omotosho had sentenced Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after convicting him on seven-count terrorism offenses. The judge also ordered that Kanu be kept in protective custody outside Kuje Correctional Centre and restricted from making use of digital devices

What do you think about the spread of fake news and its impact on the judicial system? Should there be stricter laws to regulate online content?
