Federal Government Terminates Port Harcourt-Aba Road Contract Due to Poor Performance

The Federal Government has terminated the contract for the 43-kilometer Port Harcourt-Aba road project due to poor performance by the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the decision after inspecting the project on Sunday.

According to Umahi, despite repeated warnings, CCECC failed to improve its work, leading to the project’s near-total collapse. The minister expressed disappointment with the contractor’s method of construction, which prioritized binder work over shoulder and wearing course construction .

Umahi cited concerns over CCECC’s approach, which left the road vulnerable to damage.
The contractor received over 20 warnings from the Federal Government regarding its performance.
Umahi stated that the road is on the verge of collapse despite significant funding.

The Federal Government plans to find a competent indigenous contractor to take over the project and ensure its completion. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and holding contractors accountable for their work .
