Federal Government Cracks Down on Fake Certificates: What You Need to Know
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a nationwide enforcement of academic credential verification to curb the menace of fake certificates. This initiative, set to commence on October 6, 2025, aims to ensure the authenticity of academic qualifications presented by current and prospective staff in all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and higher institutions .
All institutions will conduct a structured verification process for academic credentials through the National Credential Verification Service (NCVS) under the Nigerian Education Repository and Databank (NERD) programme.
No appointment will be confirmed without NCVS clearance affirming the authenticity of academic qualifications presented.
Each clearance will carry a National Credential Number and ancillary security codes for record purposes
The verification process will enhance the credibility of academic qualifications and reduce the incidence of fake certificates.
The initiative introduces a national quality assurance mechanism insulated from compromise, ensuring that academic qualifications are earned from accredited institutions and are identifiable, traceable, verifiable, and validated at the click of a button.
The use of NCVS clearance will promote transparency in the recruitment process and prevent the employment of individuals with fake certificates .
