The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to sign a new agreement on January 14, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the history of Nigeria’s university system. This development comes after weeks of negotiations between the two parties, culminating in a 40% salary increase for academic staff, effective from January 1, 2026 .

40% Salary Increase:A 40% salary increase for academic staff, effective from January 1, 2026, and reviewable after three years.
Improved Pension Benefits: Professors will earn a pension equivalent to their final annual salary upon retirement at age 70. National Research Council: Establishment of a National Research Council to fund research with at least 1% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product.
University Autonomy: Greater university autonomy and the election of academic leaders, with only professors eligible to serve as deans and provosts.
No Victimization* A guarantee that no staff member involved in past industrial actions will be victimized .

The signing of this agreement is expected to bring stability to Nigeria’s university system, which has been plagued by industrial crises for over 16 years.
