Fake Customs Officer Scammed Victims of Over N34 Million

A 59-year-old woman, Rakiyat Musa, has been arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly impersonating a Nigerian Customs officer and scamming victims of over N34 million. Musa, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was granted bail in the sum of N2.5 million with two sureties in like sum.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Cyriacus Osuji, Musa and her accomplices conspired to defraud unsuspecting victims between April and July 2025. She allegedly posed as a Nigerian Customs officer and presented an identity card to her victims to convince them of her status. Musa obtained millions of naira from her victims under the guise of supplying bags of rice and groundnut oil.

Musa is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretence, stealing, impersonation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. The offences contravene Sections 411, 314, 287, and 380(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The court granted Musa bail in the sum of N2.5 million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be resident in Lagos State, gainfully employed, and their addresses must be verified. Additionally, Musa must deposit N500,000 as part of the bail conditions. The case has been adjourned till August 11, 2025, for mention.

The case highlights the need for vigilance and caution when dealing with individuals who claim to be representatives of reputable organizations. It’s essential to verify the authenticity of such claims before engaging in any transactions.
