EU Boosts Nigeria’s Digital Transformation with €45 Million Funding

The European Union (EU) and its partners have announced a significant investment in Nigeria’s digital transformation, pledging €45 million to support the Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme. This initiative aims to equip three million Nigerians with cutting-edge digital skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and software development

The 3MTT programme, launched in 2023, seeks to drive Nigeria’s digital economy forward by providing training and support to individuals, startups, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The programme has already trained over 5,300 Nigerians, including 2,060 women and 795 individuals with disabilities, in digital skills, startup support, and entrepreneurship resources

The Digital Transformation Centre, funded by the EU, Germany, and the Kingdom of Denmark, and implemented by GIZ Nigeria, has been instrumental in promoting digital innovation and entrepreneurship across Nigeria. The centre has supported 40 startups and MSMEs with innovation tools and resources, while policy initiatives in four states are helping to reduce digital gender gaps

Inga Stefanowicz, EU’s Head of Section for Green and Digital Economy, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the digital conversation remains national, not limited to one part of the country. “We do not want this Steering Committee to remain only in Abuja,” she said, highlighting the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation

Looking ahead, stakeholders have agreed on key objectives for the next phase, including training an additional 5,800 young people, expanding green and digital skills programmes, strengthening ICT employability pathways, and scaling interventions such as mentorship, job market integration, and digital vouchers

The EU’s €45 million funding for Nigeria’s digital initiative is a significant step towards promoting digital transformation and economic growth in the country. With a strong focus on inclusion and digital literacy, the 3MTT programme is poised to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s digital economy.
