EFCC Seizes Ex-AGF Malami’s Passport Over $490m Abacha Loot Probe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has seized the international passport of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, as part of an ongoing investigation into the whereabouts of $490 million in Abacha loot recovered through Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT)

The EFCC has asked Malami to explain the whereabouts of the $490 million Abacha loot secured through MLAT. Malami has been barred from leaving Nigeria for the next month and is required to report daily to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for further interrogations

Malami has described the allegations as fabricated and said the truth would soon unfold. He stated that the engagement with the EFCC was successful and that he was released pending further meetings

The EFCC has clarified that it is not accusing Malami of theft but is demanding accountability for the $490 million Abacha loot. The commission cited the huge volume of documents Malami needs to review and the need for extensive interviews as reasons for seizing his passport

The EFCC will continue its investigation, and Malami will be required to provide detailed clarifications regarding the movement and location of the said funds. The commission has promised to release its findings after a thorough investigation
