EFCC Investigation Sparks Controversy: Abubakar Malami Demands Chairman’s Recusal

A power struggle is brewing between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and former Attorney-General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami. Malami has called on the EFCC Chairman to step aside from an ongoing investigation, citing bias and personal vendetta .

Malami’s troubles began after his recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The EFCC’s investigation has sparked a heated debate, with Malami accusing the agency of conducting a “witch-hunt” driven by personal animosity .

Malami claims the EFCC Chairman harbors a historical grudge stemming from the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which probed corruption allegations within the EFCC during Malami’s tenure as Attorney-General. This alleged grudge has led to questions about the EFCC’s impartiality in the investigation .

Malami has formally demanded that the EFCC Chairman recuse himself from the investigation, citing the need for impartiality, credibility, and public confidence. He also called on the current Attorney-General of the Federation to intervene and ensure the EFCC Chairman’s recusal .

The outcome of this controversy remains to be seen. One thing is certain, however: the EFCC’s handling of this investigation will have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
