EFCC Detains El-Rufai Over Alleged N432bn Embezzlement
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged corruption involving N432 billion. El-Rufai was questioned for hours at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, following allegations of misappropriating loans, violating due process in contract awards, and plunging the state into heavy debt .
The EFCC investigation is based on a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused El-Rufai’s administration of financial misconduct. The report alleged that about N423 billion was siphoned during his tenure, leaving the state with significant financial liabilities.
El-Rufai is also expected to face criminal prosecution over the alleged bugging of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu’s phone. The Federal Government has filed a three-count charge against him, alleging unlawful interception of phone communications.
The EFCC has been investigating El-Rufai for about a year, and he was invited for questioning in December 2025. The investigation is ongoing, and El-Rufai remains in EFCC custody.
