EFCC Cracks Down on Illegal Mining: 11 Suspects Arrested in Akwa Ibom
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 11 individuals, including seven Chinese nationals and four Nigerians, for engaging in illegal mining activities in Akwa Ibom State. The suspects were arrested on July 24, 2025, at Emem-Asuk community in the Eastern Obolo Local Government Area.
The arrested Chinese nationals include:
– Yang Chaobao, 32
– Zhong Dun Yi, 33
– Cheng Jiang, 35
– Zhong Dun Long, 37
– Pan Peiming, 33
– Lai Yiping, 37
– Zhu Lekun, 35
The Nigerian suspects are:
– David Israel, 18
– Jonah Bartholomew Jim, 24
– Samuel Samuel Timothy, 20
– Comfort Gabriel Ajaga, 23 (a translator)
The EFCC operatives from the Uyo Zonal Directorate swooped in on the suspects at two illegal mining sites, where they were extracting ilmenite, locally known as “black sand.” The suspects were setting up mining equipment at a second location, indicating a large-scale operation.
During interrogation, Comfort Gabriel Ajaga claimed she was only working as a translator and was not directly involved in the mining activities. However, the EFCC will investigate her role further. Upon completion of the investigation, the suspects will be charged to court.
The EFCC’s crackdown on illegal mining activities in Akwa Ibom State is a welcome development, as it aims to protect the country’s natural resources and prevent revenue loss.
