Domestic Workers Allege Police Torture in Patience Jonathan Jewelry Theft Trial

The trial of 15 domestic workers accused of stealing jewelry belonging to former Nigerian First Lady Patience Jonathan has resumed at the Bayelsa State High Court. During the hearing, four defendants testified about the alleged torture they suffered at the hands of police officers attached to the Operation Puff Adder unit.

The defendants, Golden Vivian, Vincent Olabiyi, Tamunosiki Achese, and Emmanuel Aginwa, narrated chilling accounts of how they were suspended, beaten, and forced to confess to the crime. According to a source familiar with the case, the four defendants gave consistent testimony about their torture during cross-examination, all of which corroborated their claims of police brutality.

The presiding judge, apparently moved by the sustained media attention and public pressure, has fixed August 11 and 12, 2025, for the conclusion of the defence stage. The development has brought hope to the defendants and their families, who have been advocating for justice and an end to police brutality.

The allegations of police torture and brutality in this case highlight the need for accountability and reform within the Nigeria Police Force. As the trial concludes, it remains to be seen how the court will rule on the matter and whether justice will be served for the defendants.
