Controversy Surrounds New Super Eagles Coach: Is Eric Chelle Up to the Task?

The Nigerian Football Federation’s (NFF) recent appointment of Eric Chelle as the new Super Eagles coach has sparked heated debate. Former chairman of Gombe FA, Gara Gombe, has publicly expressed his disappointment, labeling Chelle a “kindergarten coach” who is not equipped to handle the team’s world-class players ¹.

Chelle’s coaching resume includes stints at GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran, but Gombe argues that his experience is insufficient to lead the Super Eagles. “Who is Chelle? Who knows him? What was his antecedent? Nothing,” Gombe told Brila FM.

The NFF’s decision to appoint Chelle has raised eyebrows, particularly given the team’s recent performances. The Super Eagles have been without a permanent head coach since Finidi George quit in June 2024, and the team’s fans are eager for a return to winning ways.

While Chelle’s appointment may have come as a surprise to many, it’s worth noting that he has a respectable coaching record, including a stint as the head coach of Mali’s national team. However, whether he has the experience and expertise to lead the Super Eagles to victory remains to be seen.

As the debate surrounding Chelle’s appointment continues, one thing is clear: the Super Eagles need a coach who can inspire confidence and deliver results. Only time will tell if Eric Chelle is the right man for the job.
