CAF Upholds Senegal’s AFCON 2025 Title, Fines Both Teams for Misconduct

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected Morocco’s petition to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title. The decision comes after Morocco filed a complaint alleging unruly conduct by Senegalese players and officials during the final match .

Although Senegal retains the title, both teams have been fined for misconduct. Senegal’s football federation will pay a total of $615,000 in fines, broken down into:

– $300,000 for improper conduct by supporters
– $300,000 for unsporting behavior by players and staff
– $15,000 for misconduct related to five yellow cards received during the final

Additionally, Senegal’s coach, Pape Thiaw, has been suspended for five official CAF matches and fined $100,000. Players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr have each been suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behavior towards the referee .

Morocco’s football federation will pay a total of $315,000 in fines, including:

– $200,000 for inappropriate behavior by stadium ball boys
– $100,000 for improper conduct by players and staff
– $15,000 for fans’ use of lasers

Morocco’s captain, Achraf Hakimi, has been suspended for two official CAF matches for unsporting behavior, with one match suspended for one year. Player Ismael Saibari has been suspended for three official CAF matches for unsporting behavior and fined $100,000 .

CAF’s decision to uphold Senegal’s title win emphasizes the importance of fair play and sportsmanship in African football. The governing body has made it clear that misconduct will not be tolerated, and teams will face consequences for their actions .
